Engineering & Technology for the 21st Century: Global Awareness

Importance

Technology has flattened the world, created new markets, and global engineering companies. Many engineers and technologists in the 21st century must be able to understand people and cultures and work effectively within this context. While many BYU students have two years of experience working with people of different cultures and countries, the college seeks to enhance those skills by experiences a technical context.

Outcome

Establish a culture that develops within students the characteristics shown below. Fully 50% of our students will have experience in working with global engineering and technology projects.

WisdomValue the newly-flat world and the responsibilities and opportunities it affords. Value individuals from all cultures and backgrounds. Able to effect change in how they and their organizations operate within the global context.
UnderstandingAppreciate cultural differences and how culture affects how people {think, live, work}, and governmental and economic policies. Consider international implications when doing engineering and technology work.
KnowledgeAble to live, communicate, and collaborate in a different culture.
InformationUnderstand the language, economic system, and government organization of one or more other cultures applicable to their field.
