The College of Engineering and Technology sponsors CAEDM
(Computer Aided Engineering Design and Manufacturing).
CAEDM provides computer facilities which include the
required engineering and office software, servers, and
network infrastructure. Network and lab administrators
and employees manage 400+ new accounts every year, most
of which are created for users not familiar with large
networks and also not familiar with the UNIX operating
system resident on many of the CAEDM systems. This unfamiliarity
poses a significant training challenge, not to mention
many large headaches for new users. In the past, the
knowledge of how to use the CAEDM resources has been
given by word of mouth from student to student or taught
in those classes which require the use of CAEDM resources.
New users can experience a great deal of frustration
when they do not have the needed UNIX, Windows or network
skills. A user’s guide is provided to help you
develop the skill set needed to succeed in the CAEDM
environment.
To use CAEDM applications, you must be eligible to receive an account on the CAEDM network. This means that you must be currently registered for a class within a College of Engineering and Technology department, or you are a declared major in one of our departments, or you are an employee of one of our departments. You should also have a basic knowledge of the Windows operating system. In other words, you should know what a directory is, what a file is, how to drag and drop files, and you should know that deleting your files makes them disappear. If you don’t have this basic knowledge, don’t worry. There are many people willing to help, so don’t be afraid to ask a lab assistant, your neighbor, or a lab administrator. We will not here provide extensive information on using the Windows operating system. We will, however, provide some general “start up” information about the UNIX operating system, as well as how UNIX and Windows have been adapted to fit our needs.
CAEDM stands for Computer Aided Engineering Design and Manufacturing. CAEDM is essentially the computer network connecting all of the College of Engineering and Technology with its’ computer labs in several locations in the Crabtree, Clyde, and Snell buildings. There are three main CAEDM labs. One is located in 450 CTB. The other two are in 308 CB and 425 CB. These are general use labs. The door code for access to these labs is given when you create your account. There are other labs which are sponsored by departments within the College which, though somewhat more restricted, still have workstations which make the CAEDM applications available to users. The door codes for these labs can usually be obtained from the department secretary. Table 1 shows where these labs are and which department sponsors them.

Many of these labs contain other special peripheral equipment. Table 2 shows the location of this peripheral equipment in the general use labs. This table does not show most of the peripherals available in the department sponsored labs.

CAEDM supports a wide variety of software on both UNIX and Windows platforms in the three main labs. In addition, most CAEDM applications are available from the CAEDM Citrix application servers which provide the applications to any capable system with a standard browser. To access these applications, visit: http://www.et.byu.edu/caedm/citrix/manager.htm and follow the directions for setup. Generally, all of the applications you will need are available in the labs or from the Citrix application servers, or both. If there is an application you need for your required course work that is not available from the labs or the application server, ask your professor about requesting that the application be made available.
The CAEDM team consists of system administrators, CSRs (Computer Support Representatives), and part-time employees that support all of the CAEDM facilities. For more information on the CAEDM team, visit: http://www.et.byu.edu/caedm/fulltime_personnel.php. These team members are here to help you with almost anything related to the CAEDM facilities.
The CAEDM labs are open 24 hours every day. Students
are encouraged not to use the labs on Sunday, but
are not prohibited from doing so. Normal hours for
the Clyde and Crabtree buildings are 6:00 AM to 11:00
PM. You can remain in the buildings after hours, but
you will not be able to reenter the building if you
leave after 11:00 PM. These lab hours are considered
an exceptional privilege. Most university labs close
at midnight or earlier.
