Three Civil Engineering Students have received Scholarships and Fellowships:
Amy Birdsall was the sole recipient of the $2,500 CRSI Cameron Graduate Scholarship.
John Shelley, who recently graduated from BYU with a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering, was selected for the prestigious Self Graduate Fellowship at the University of Kansas. The Self Graduate Fellowship focuses on leadership development for Ph.D. students in technical disciplines. "The Self Graduate Fellowship is a four-year award consisting of a $24,000 annual payment, full tuition and fees, and a development program. The Fellow Development Program provides general education and training in communication, management, and leadership to assist Self Fellows in preparation for future leadership roles, complementing the specialized education and training provided in the Ph.D. programs. Fellows interact with nationally prominent experts to gain broad knowledge of public policy issues. A capstone of the development program is an intensive public policy seminar held in Washington, D.C." (Source: http://www2.ku.edu/~selfpro/index.shtml)

Ben Reese, a graduate student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department of BYU, recently received a prestigious research fellowship from the Portland Cement Association (PCA). The award, one of eight given this year in the United States, provides $20,000 to complete research under the topic of transportation materials. Specifically, Mr. Reese will be continuing his graduate research investigating the assessment of road base materials using an instrument called a Clegg Hammer. Mr. Reese has also been invited to represent his research group and BYU at several national PCA conventions. He is the only student to have won this esteemed award at BYU in recent history.
