Professor Steven Benzley, with the assistance of seven students from the Ira A. Fulton college of Engineering and Technology, conducted Engineering Ethics Workshops in Romania during the week of May 14-18, 2007. These workshops were the direct result of a funded "Small Helm" project initiated by John Shelley, an undergraduate student of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Small Helm projects are a part of Professor Benzley's efforts funded under the King and Dianne Husein Professorship. These projects are student formulated ideas, submitted to Professor Benzley as formal proposals that have the potential of making a major positive impact in correcting the problem of widespread graft and corruption in the global civil engineering and construction industry. The workshops were conducted at the Technical University of Civil Engineering, Bucharest, and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Over 175 Romanian engineering students had the opportunity to participate in these workshops.
In addition, the BYU team had the opportunity to visit the Bucharest office of Washington Group International and the tour the construction of the "Autostrada Transilvania" - currently the largest roadway construction project in Europe. The outcomes of this international trip were extremely satisfying for both Romanian and BYU students.
