CEEn Student Named to All-MWC Swimming Team

Kirsty Ferrell

Kirsty Ferrell, member of the BYU Swimming team and a CEEn student, was named to the All-MWC Team. To be placed on the all-conference team, an individual must place in the top six of a men’s event and the top eight for women. For both the men’s and women’s relays, the all-conference team consists of the top three finishers in each race.

Moreover, the BYU Women Swimming Team came out as Conference Champions, their eighth MWC title in 10 years.

Kirsty comes from a family with great tradition not only in swimming but also in Civil Engineering. The Ferrell family has had four family members on the team at BYU. Older siblings John and Monica both graduated and have left campus.

“I love it,” Kirsty said. “I had my other brother, John, here when Jeff was on his mission.”

In 2004, Jeff returned from his mission and signed up for every class with his sister.

“Yeah, we have the same major,” he said. “The whole family has. We have civil engineers going back three or four generations.

Kirsty and Jeff swim opposite events in meets. Jeff, who swims the distance events, finished 15th at the Mountain West Conference Championships last year in the 200 backstroke. Kirsty is one of the leading sprinters on the team with two of the fastest times this year in the 50 and 100 free.

Kirsty is the only member of her family to swim sprint events at BYU instead of the distance events.
