UDOT's Quarterly Newsletter Highlights the Work of Dr. Hotchkiss

Teo

The UDOT Research Division September 2009 Edition Newsletter includes an article on the Work of Dr. Hotchkiss.

Many even within UDOT don't know that in the last three years, one of the foremost experts on highway fish passage has been working with UDOT to: 1. Develop a fish passage strategy; 2. Develop fish passage standards and a manual; and 3. Identify fish passage critical locations on a Geographic Information System (GIS) map. Dr. Rollin Hotchkiss, from the Brigham Young University (BYU) Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, with the aid of two dedicated students, has developed one of the best manuals on fish passage in the country. Dr. Hotchkiss was working on fish passage at Washington State University, prior to coming to BYU three years ago. He was studying ways to improve passage for salmon migration. Additionally, he developed a summary of all research on fish passage for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The manual, "Fish Passage at Utah Culverts: Prioritization and Assessment" developed by Dr. Hotchkiss and Aaron Beavers, a former graduate student passionate about fish passage, outlines a strategy for Utah fish passage, tells how to prioritize waterways that cross the highway for fish passage, tells how to assess existing culverts for fish passage and provides a training for practitioners.
