Grading Policy - Winter 2009

  1. READ the following information and maintain your grade record on BlackBoard. You are responsible for the accuracy of the BlackBoard grade record. You will be able to update it at any time during the semester until the deadline (see 12 below). Your grade can be changed after this date, but this will incur a drop in your grade of half a letter. Clear any and all exceptions to the requirements on this page through the department secretaries.

  2. You receive one point for each CE Department seminar and College lecture series you attend. Each Thursday after class, an attendance quiz will appear in the “Attendance Quizzes” category on Blackboard. Complete this one question quiz to receive credit for attending seminar/college lecture each week. Please be present on time and remain seated until the end of all seminar/college programs. Our guest presenters deserve this courtesy. Please remain seated until appropriate appreciation has been expressed to guest speakers.

  3. If you miss one or two Department seminars or College Lectures you may make this up by earning extra service and/or activity points. A maximum of two make-up points may be earned. You may earn these points by:

    1. Attending an ASCE Central Utah Branch meeting. One point per meeting.
    2. Attend Student Chapter activities including field trips, socials, etc. One point per activity.
    3. Work extra hours on chapter service projects. One point per hour of service performed.

    4. Record these make-up points by completing a make-up attendance quiz for each individual point. You can access this quiz in the "Make-up Attendance Quizzes" folder under the "Attendance Quizzes" category on Blackboard.

  4. Chapter service and activity points are awarded on following basis. One point is given for each hour you spend working on an ASCE service project. Only time spent working on service projects sponsored by the ASCE student chapter qualify for these points. One point is given for each non-service ASCE activity you attend (not for each hour you spend at the activity). Each student is expected to spend a minimum of five hours to earn these five points. Three of the five points must be from an ASCE service project. Record your points on Blackboard by completing a quiz in the “Service/Activity Point Quizzes” category after each hour of service you give or activity you attend.

You will only be able to record your participation in service projects and activities that are on the approved list of ASCE service projects and activities. You will find a link to this list under the “Service/Activity Point Quizzes” category on Blackboard. Service projects and activities will be added periodically throughout the semester as they are announced. If you find that a service project or activity has been announced, but is not on the approved list, contact an ASCE officer to verify that they have notified the CE secretaries of its existence.
  5. NEW REQUIREMENT: Anyone enrolled in 100A/B is required to complete one additional activity point above and beyond the five points specified above. This activity point must be completed by attending a field trip. These field trips will be announced in seminar as specially arranged for 100A/B students, although other seminar students may attend to complete one of their activity points. If a 100A/B student, record your points on Blackboard by completing the field trip quiz in the “Service/Activity Point Quizzes” category after attending a field trip.

  6. NEW REQUIREMENT: All students (with the exception of those enrolled in 400C/498R, sec. 3) are required to record notes during each seminar/college lecture in a notebook that will be turned in on the last seminar of the semester. This notebook is worth three points and needs to be turned in on the last day of seminar-April 9, 2009.

  7. NEW REQUIREMENT: All students enrolled in 400C/498R are required to write five papers on assigned topics that will be due one paper per week during the last five weeks of class. These papers will be based on notes that you have taken during your experience in seminar. Papers should be 2-3 pages each and double spaced. Papers are worth three points each. The topics and due dates will be as follows:
  8. Paper 1: Leadership Due in Class: March 12, 2009
Paper 2: Life-long Learning Due in Class: March 19, 2009
Paper 3: Management and Business Practices Due in Class: March 26, 2009
Paper 4: Global and Societal Impacts of Civil Engineering Due in Class: April 2, 2009
Paper 5: Contemporary Issues in Civil Engineering Due in Class: April 9, 2009

  9. Anyone enrolled in 100A/B receives four points for making a visit with their faculty advisor. This requirement must be completed during your first enrollment in a 100-level seminar, whether that be 100A or 100B. It does not need to be completed again during your second enrollment in a 100-level seminar. To receive this credit, the visit must be completed on or before Jan 30, 2009 . Please see this list of advisor assignments or talk to the CE secretaries to find out who your advisor is. To receive credit for your visit, make sure to have your faculty advisor sign your faculty visit slip (which can be obtained through the CE secretaries) and return the visit slip to the CE secretaries so they can enter your points into your BlackBoard grade record.

  10. If enrolled in 100A/B or 200A/B, you will be required to complete a one-point quiz confirming you have enabled your CAEDM account by January 23, 2009. Everyone needs to complete this quiz, regardless if you enabled your account up during a previous semester. You will need to take this quiz in 100A, 100B, 200A, and 200B even though you only need to set up the CAEDM account once. This is meant to ensure all freshmen AND new transfer students have the opportunity to set up their accounts. If this is your first enrollment in seminar, before you take this quiz, you need to enable your CAEDM account. This account has an associated email account where the address is in the form of: username@et.byu.edu. In order to receive e-mails about service hours and chapter activities you must have this email address enabled. You can sign up for it outside of the CAEDM lab room 423 CB. You must enable your account and report that you have enabled it by completing the CAEDM quiz under the “Assignments” category on Blackboard on or before January 23, 2009 to receive the point.

  11. Anyone enrolled in 200A/B will be required to present a four-year degree plan for approval. This requirement must be completed during your first enrollment in a 200-level seminar, whether that be 200A or 200B. It does not need to be completed again during your second enrollment in a 200-level seminar. Kerry will indicate approval by signing a copy of the final degree plan, which the students will input into MyMap. A copy of the degree plan will be put into the student's department records. Kerry will also confirm that the student has entered the data into MyMap before awarding the students points for the assignment. Information has to be approved and entered into MyMap by Feb 13, 2009 .

  12. Anyone enrolled in 400C (also known as 498R, section 3) will be required to complete additional assignments. More information on assignment details, due dates, and point values will be added to your “Assignments” category on Blackboard at a later time.

  13. Keep track of the points you earn by completing the above mentioned quizzes on blackboard (attendance, make-up attendance, service/activity points, CAEDM set-up). You are responsible to guarantee its accuracy. The last day you will be able to make modifications to your blackboard grade record is Apr 22, 2009 . If you must make changes after the deadline, you will need to see the CE secretaries and your grade will drop half a letter.
