BYU CHEMICAL ENGINEERING ALUMNI SOCIETY COMMITTEES
There are six committees of the BYU Chemical Engineering Alumni Society. Each committee is chaired by a board member on the BYU ChemE Alumni Society and is described below. Each committee needs volunteers to help accomplish and implement the BYU ChemE Alumni Society objectives. If you would like to volunteer to be on a committee, contact the board member who chairs that committee by clicking on the link to their e-mail.

The purpose of the Membership committee is to create and nurture fellowship among the alumni, BYU ChemE students, and the department. The committee invites all BYU chemical engineering graduates and current and past faculty members to become members of the society.
The Membership committee plans to identify and locate former students/graduates from the BYU Chemical Engineering Department and recruit them for charter membership into the alumni society. The department website and the university database resources will be utilized to accomplish this endeavor. The membership information will be regulated by Article X of the Society By-Laws that prohibit use of membership lists for advertising, circularization, or solicitation except explicitly authorized by the alumni board of directors.
The alumni society members may contribute by disseminating society information to alumni/former classmates to assist them in maintaining relationships, seeking employment, and providing technical resources or service projects in the spirit of BYU.
The Networking/Career Development Committee was established to facilitate interaction between BYU Chemical Engineering alumni to further career development opportunities and personal fulfillment. The committee will enable networking activities focused around:
- Career development (building your own, or helping others build theirs)
- Resource development (identify sources of traditional and non-traditional expertise)
- Personal relationships (old friends, other home makers, etc)
- Encouragement of mentoring relationships to allow alumni to broaden their horizons
- Awards to recognize outstanding contributions by alumni
Initially the committee is working with the membership and communications committees in establishing the database of alumni and communicating to them so that we can gather the information about the alumni to facilitate networking activities. As the on-line databases are established, the committee will work to develop opportunities related to:
- Alumni profiles to identify past classmates and alumni related to your field
- Publish examples of career paths and résumé’s of successful alumni
- To recognize accomplished alumni
- To provide resources for younger alumni planning their career path
- Provide a mechanism for alumni to establish mentoring relationships
- Identify mature alumni who could provide seasoned experience and advice
- Identify mentors with similar background/values for younger alumni and students
- Facilitate relationships focused on areas of special experience/expertise
- Develop information in the database of what resources/expertise exist among the alumni
- Leverage BYU & AICHE employment services to enhance career options for alumni
- Honor the outstanding alumni
The Service Committee spearheads finding opportunities for alumni to render service to those who may stand in need. As Chemical Engineers, we have a unique capability to provide expertise in disaster situations or in everyday living situations. We also have an obligation to provide service to others.
The committee stands ready to receive input on possible avenues of assistance from the members of the BYU ChemE Alumni Society. We will make information available to members on how they might assist in service efforts (both group efforts as well as individual efforts) through the Communications Committee via the BYU ChemE web page and newsletter. We would also like to hear of activities that have happened or which may be performed by members. These will be published in the newsletter.
The committee is currently talking with the World Health Organization (WHO) to see if there is something that we can assist with in water purification efforts in developing countries. We will keep you informed and hope for your assistance.
The Department Support Committee is a primary interface to provide support to and obtain support from the Chemical Engineering Department, when department and society resources need to be coordinated to accomplish common objectives. In pursuing this purpose, the committee also provides service to the other committees of the society.
In close cooperation with the department, the Support Committee has planned the annual BYU Chemical Engineering Homecoming Banquet for chemical engineering faculty and alumni.
The mission of the Department Support Committee is to provide support to students who are currently enrolled in and faculty who are currently employed by Brigham Young University. The support will be focused on assisting to:
- Provide student and professor internships.
- Enhance the BYU Chemical Engineering Department academic ranking
- Establish additional scholarships, through:
- Obtaining contributions from alumni, industry and philanthropic individuals and organizations. (Future newsletters will include specific scholarships for which funding is being sought.)
The Communication committee is in charge of gathering and posting information for the BYU ChemE Alumni Society via the BYU Chemical Engineering Webpage and the BYU Chemical Engineering Newsletter. Information for the webpage and newsletter will be gathered from the alumni and the BYU ChemE Alumni Society committees. Articles about the Alumni Society, the members, and alumni announcements are written by the members of the BYU ChemE Alumni Society and published in the BYU Chemical Engineering Newsletter.
The Financial/Budget Committee was established to collect, monitor, budget and coordinate funds in support of the chemical engineering alumni organization. Income is provided through donations, dues and sponsors. Expenses are the result of objectives defined by the alumni organization and include items such as scholarships and administrative costs. An annual audit will be completed by the end of January for the preceding year.
