Annual L. Douglas Smoot Outstanding Alumnus Award 2000

Sheldon R. Murphy received his B.S. degree from Brigham Young University in 1961 and his PhD from the University of Utah in 1965, both in Chemical Engineering. He then accepted a position with Johnson and Johnson Corporation, Chicopee Division, in New Brunswick, NJ as a process engineer. There , he found a fertile location to apply engineering concepts, mathematical/statistical interests and computer practices. He became a within corporation technical consultant, later organizing and heading J&J Corporate Management and Technical Services.

In 1975 he joined FMC Chemicals Group in Princeton, NJ as Director of Technology and later as Director of R&D for the Agricultural Chemicals Division. Sheldon joined PepsiCo in 1980, as Corporate head of Engineering and Quality Control in Valhalla, NY and moved his family of 7 to New Canaan, CT.

He left Pepsico in 1982 to start Performance Management Group, consulting in technology transfer, accelerated commercialization, project selection, new business development and technology acquisition.

In 1986, with wife LaWynn and daughter LaDawn, Sheldon left to head the newly formed Brasil Campinas Mission for the Church. Upon return in 1989, he focused on company turn-arounds and a start-up business, Nature Plus Enzyme Products, where he acts as President and CEO, with products in industrial and municipal odor control, specialty cleaning and soil stabilization. His Portuguese and Spanish language skills have assisted greatly in Latin American market development. They were selected as a CT Fast 50 Growth Company in 1998 and 1999, for the CT Governors Award for Exporting in 1999 and the US Presidential "E" Award for Excellence in Exporting in 2000. Currently, Sheldon serves as Bishop of a Singles Ward in Stamford, CT.
