Annual L. Douglas Smoot Outstanding Alumnus Award 2001

A native of Tremonton, Utah, David N. Weidman received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Brigham Young University in 1978 and his MBA from the University of Michigan in 1980.

He began his career in the chemical industry in 1980 as a business development analyst for American Cyanamid company in Wayne, New Jersey. While at Cyanamid, he held management responsibilities in strategic planning, business development, sales and marketing, international management, and acquisition integration in businesses as diverse as specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and agricultural chemicals. In 1990, he was appointed vice president and general manager of the company's Fibers Division.

In 1994, Mr. Weidman joined Allied Signal as vice president and general manager of Performance Additives. His leadership at Allied Signal included appointments as president of Fluorine Products and of Performance Polymers. He served as an officer of the company and a member of the Corporate Executive Council.

On September 1, 2000, Mr. Weidman joined Celanese AG as a member of the board of Management and chief executive officer of Celanese chemicals, the chemicals business of Celanese AG headquartered in Dallas, Texas. On his one-year anniversary with the company, the Board of Directors appointed him chief operating officer of Celanese AG, assuming additional responsibility for the company's polymers business - Ticona, effective January 1, 2002.

During his career, he has lived and worked in Japan, Sweden, Canada as well as in various U.S. locations. He and his wife Rachel have six children and are in the process of moving from Richmond, Virginia to Dallas, Texas.
