In 1964 Vern T. May received his B.E.S. degree from Brigham Young University in Chemical Engineering. He then accepted a position with Dow Chemical as a project manager where he was involved with research in various areas. In 1979 he became a Technical Director at Dow Chemical heading up organic chemical research and commercializing a new coal liquefaction process. From 1983-1984 Vern May led the technical response to Dow’s Dioxin crisis. In 1984 he directed global agricultural chemical manufacturing for Dow Chemical with operations in Europe, Asia, South America, Mexico, Canada and the US. In 1986 he changed to the position of Director of Applied Science and Technology Laboratories where he led development efforts resulting in a new air separation membrane and the formation of a new subsidiary for the company. In 1991 Vern May became the Director of Health and Environmental Sciences for Dow Chemical. While in this position he implemented a quality management program that reduced the cost of services 10% per year. He also led the effort that consolidated all toxicology services for Dow Chemical and its subsidiaries – Dow Elanco and Marion Merrill Dow – saving the corporation approximately $5 Million each year. In 1995 Vern retired from Dow Chemical.
From 1995-1997 he worked in the Lindon Bishop’s Storehouse as a church service missionary. From 1998-1999 he served a temple mission in Manila Philippines. He then served as the Europe East Area Executive Secretary in Moscow, Russia from 2000-2001. He is currently serving as ward clerk for the Highland 15 th ward and as an ordinance worker at the Timpanogos Temple. He is married to SaraLynn May, and they have 9 children and 21 grandchildren.
