Chemical Engineering MSDNAA Subscription
We have established a department-wide license for all Microsoft software development tools that is now free for all ChEn students, staff, and faculty (students meaning they are currently enrolled in at least one ChEn course). The software is available for academic and personal development use (not commercial use) on either a department or personal computer. Some of the details associated with its use are as follows (same rules apply to students, staff and faculty below):
Some Usage Guidelines
Note: Full Guidelines are contained in the license agreement you must click 'yes' to when you select a piece of software after logging in.
- Each student is limited to ONE copy of each product.
-
Q: Do MSDNAA products provide the same functionality as those available through the retail market?
A: Yes, a product purchased through the MSDNAA program offers the same functionality as a product purchased through the retail market. Students taking "at least one credit course offered by Chemical Engineering" can "install the software on their personal machines for use in coursework and personal development projects." -
Q. If students get software through MSDN AA, do they have unlimited usage of the software?
A. No, MSDN AA software is intended for use in academic pursuits of STEM disciplines: schoolwork, research, academic projects, and so on are all acceptable uses. -
Q. Can students keep these tools after they graduate?
A. Yes, this license is perpetual and nontransferable. You don't have to uninstall the tools, but the stipulation of "academic use only" does not change. -
Q. In one class, students used MSDN AA tools to create a product that is so good they plan to sell it. Can products made with MSDN AA software be sold commercially?
A. Yes, the only stipulation is the purchase of commercial licenses for all tools used in the creation of a new product prior to selling the product in a commercial situation. -
Q. Can professional support staff for departmental labs check out software?
A. Yes, professional support staff whose primary responsibility is to maintain departmental labs are eligible to install MSDN AA software on their personal computers for non-commercial use. The license amendment defines "Staff" as "any personnel duly engaged by the Qualified Educational User to teach or instruct Students and/or to conduct non-commercial research or other development related activities on behalf of Qualified Educational User." - The list of software available includes everything that could be considered a development package (all OS, languages, developer tools, most applications including Access, Visio, Project, MapPoint, FrontPage, etc.) but not purely commercial (non-development) packages such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Flight Simulator, etc.
