1. Q: Do I need to take the GRE exam?

A: All applicants who submit a completed application after June 30, 2003 must take the general GRE exam within 4 years prior to the application and submit an official score to the BYU graduate school.

2. Q: Do I need to take any topical GRE exams, such as engineering or chemistry?

A: No.

3. Q: What is the minimum GRE exam score?

A: all scores are considered. Acceptable scores on the quantitative part are usually above 700; for the verbal part acceptable scores are usually above 550; for the analytical part, acceptable scores are above 3

4. Q: Is the TOEFL exam required?

A: All students need to take the TOEFL exam within 4 years prior to the application and submit an official score to the BYU graduate school with the exception of students from the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, or other countries in which English is the native language. Students whose native tongue is English, but are from non-English speaking countries, may get this requirement waived by speaking (by phone) with a faculty member at BYU.

5. Q: Can I send photocopies of my GRE and TOEFL documents?

A: Our chemical engineering department will accept photocopies of these documents for evaluation purposes, but the University will not admit a student unless an official GRE document is received.

6. Q: How much is tuition?

A: The graduate tuition per semester for the 2003-2004 academic year is $1,990 for students who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and $2,985 for students who are not members. Currently the Chemical Engineering Department pays a portion of tuition for Ph.D. candidates and for M.S. candidates. The amount varies depending upon department resources.

7. Q: What financial assistance is available?

A: Most new Ph.D. students receive a Teaching Assistantship that will provide at least $16,000 during the first year. In subsequent years, most students will receive a research assistantship from their research advisor. Nearly all of the faculty in our department have external research funding that provides research assistantships to graduate students in the amount of $16,000 to $20,000 per year.

8. Q: Do I need to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to attend BYU?

A: No. Admission to the University and to our department is done without regard to religious beliefs. All students who attend Brigham Young University must abide by a code of behavior that includes honesty in school work and in the community, obedience to laws, modesty in dress, and abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and illegal or harmful drugs.
