AICHE Regional Conference Results

For those who have not yet heard the news, BYU swept the competition at the AIChE Regional Conference last weekend in Laramie.  Jordan Wilcken's Chem-E-Car came in first place ($200) with 68.5 feet (the target distance was 73 feet).  The 2nd place team's car from the University of Wyoming traveled 67.5 feet.  It was a close race!  The University of Utah came in 3rd (at least we beat them this year in something).  As for the paper competition (a misnomer- it's an oral presentation competition), Randy Shurtz came in 1st place ($200) and will represent the region at the national paper competition in November.  Chris Broadbent came in 2nd place ($100).  Again, the University of Utah came in 3rd place.  We had 4 presenters from BYU.  We received $500 of the available $650 in prize money.  Please congratulate the students for a job well done.  We brought 8 students to Laramie.

Best Paper Award for 2 Papers
The Heat Transfer Committee has awarded the Best Paper Award to two papers that were presented at the 2006 ASME Turbo Expo in Barcelona, Spain. This is a rare achievement and we are pleased to be recognized once again. The papers, entitled "Evolution of Surface Deposits on a High Pressure Turbine Blade, Part I: Physical Characteristics" and "Part II: Convective Heat Transfer," demonstrate the hard work of BYU professors Dr. Bons and Dr. Fletcher, as well as that of several students. These awards will be presented in May at the 2007 Turbo Expo in Montreal, Canada.
