Get An Engineering Computer Account
An engineering computer account is a valuable complement to your BYU Route Y computer account. The Route Y account gives you access to BYU internet resources and email. But a computer account through the College “Computer Aided Engineering Design and Manufacture” (CAEDM) system will provide access to a variety of software packages, from word processing and spreadsheets to a number of sophisticated specialized programs for your technical classes. So, we recommend that new students in chemical engineering obtain a CAEDM account soon after beginning their first semester at BYU. Here’s how to do it:
• If you are already declared to be an engineering major, go directly to the computer terminals outside room 423 CB (or go to room 317 CB) and follow the instructions as any of the terminals that you choose steps you through the process of setting up an account. Your username will be your RouteY ID. You will also be asked to make up a password and to enter it (usually 6 to 8 characters long and preferably including one or two numbers). After you enter the information requested by the computer, an account will automatically be activated for you.
• If you are not declared as an engineering major, you will be allowed to create an account as described above, but it will be a temporary account that will be good for one semester only.
• You may use your CAEDM account on all computers that are part of the CAEDM network, such as those in room 425 CB, 217 CB, and 450 CTB. You can also connect to the CAEDM network and use your account from a personal laptop using wireless connection.
• When you create a new CAEDM account, you now have the ability to print. For each page that you print in black and white, $.05 will be charged against your signature card balance. Pages printed in color have a charge of $0.50. (make sure to set up your RouteY Signature account as well).
• Your account will also generate an email address for you, consisting of your account name (see above) followed by @et.byu.edu. This is a different address than the one given to you through Route Y, so you will have at least two addresses (although, it is possible to use the “alias” system in Route Y to automatically forward one to the other or to create new aliases).
If you have trouble with any of the above procedures, come to the Chemical Engineering Department office in 350 CB, where help will be provided for you.
