Welcome home from your mission! We know that it can sometimes be an adjustment to remember all of the things to do when you return to BYU. Please look at the following helps for returning students in Chemical Engineering:

  1. We strongly urge you to see your advisor in the Chemical Engineeirng Department as soon as posible. You can contact the office to remind you of who your advisor curently is. This is important; we may be able to help you avoid costly registration mistakes that will prolong graduation by as much as one year.

  2. You can apply for a returned missionary scholarship for the semester or term that you return to BYU, as long as you are taking courses towards a degree in Chemical Engineering. This is a $100 scholarship to help with books, etc.; applications are available in the department office.

  3. Dr. L. Douglas and Marian Bird Smoot Scholarship

  4. This scholarship is to provide financial support to a limited number of students who are returned missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and who commit to an engineering or technology major. Preference will be given to those students majoring in Chemical Engineering.
This scholarship is available to students who will be in their first year at BYU after returning from a Church mission. A minimum BYU grade point average of at least 3.0 is required as evidence of scholastic ability. The award criteria will be a combination of grade point average and financial need. An application form can be obtained from the Chemical Engineering Department secretaries. Each scholarship award will be a maximum of $1000 per student per academic year, or 1/3 of the tuition amount for a semester for an LDS student, whichever is greater. This is a one-time award; recipients are not eligible for awards in additional academic years.

  5. There are several ways to brush up on your math skills:

  6. Many students choose to work on the computers provided by the College of Engineering. However, some students prefer to work on home computers. A student version of Mathcad is available for a small charge in the Chemical Engineering office. Microsoft Office is available for students in the BYU Bookstore at a greatly reduced price.
