Dedicated to innovation: Engineering Building Dedication recap

Elder David A. Bednar dedicates Engineering Building

BYU’s new Engineering Building is home to far more than traditional classrooms.

The 180,000 square-foot, 5 story-high building features state-of-the-art research labs, experiential learning spaces, and classrooms equipped with tools for modern pedagogy.

Dedicated December 4, 2018 by Elder David A. Bednar, member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the building helps meet the tremendous growth BYU’s College of Engineering has experienced in the last four decades and offers students boundless learning opportunities.

“Our excitement for this new facility is not just about additional space to accommodate growth,” College of Engineering Dean Michael A. Jensen said. “It’s about the new capabilities essential to our efforts to train the next generation of engineers.”

With new spaces for students and faculty to learn and work in innovate settings, the new building facilitates peer-to-peer learning, leadership experience and student opportunities.

The building houses a variety of research laboratories, experiential learning spaces, project bays, team rooms and a student club commons area in additional to classrooms and offices.

During the dedicatory prayer, Elder Bednar recognized the generosity of donors who funded the building.

“We thank Thee for the munificent contributions from individuals and families that have made these beautiful structures possible,” Elder Bednar said. “May the faith and commitment of those who benefit from these gifts be equal to the faith in commitment of those who have given these gifts.”

Elder Bednar also blessed the Engineering Building as a place of inspired learning for students and faculty who will study and work in it.

“We pray that the individuals who use these buildings may be filled with a spirit of curiosity and inquiry, of creativity and innovation, of pondering and learning, of insight and revelation, and of perseverance and joyfulness,” Elder Bednar said.

“Our Beloved Heavenly Father, we come unto Thee in prayer in the name of Thy Beloved Son and our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. We gather this afternoon on the campus of Brigham Young University with grateful hearts. In this joyous season of thanksgiving and of celebrating our Savior’s birth we cannot say the smallest part of the love and appreciation we feel for Thee and for Thy Son. We are assembled to consider and learn from the past, to anticipate and prepare for the future, and to dedicate unto Thee these new facilities. Father, we thank Thee for the life and the mission of Thy Son. We are grateful for His Atonement. We unitedly express our love for Him for His life, His doctrine, His example and His willing and loving sacrifice. We pray that we may always be mindful of our responsibilities to honor His name to remember Him at all times and in all places, and to keep His commandments. We thank Thee that the fullness of the gospel is being restored to the earth in this latter-day dispensation, and we thank Thee for the privilege of living upon the earth at this time and assisting in the building of the kingdom. We thank Thee for this remarkable institution, even Brigham Young University, and for all who have labored to build and strengthen it over so many decades. We acknowledge Thy hand in establishing and prospering this university. We know that this school has a particular and a peculiar mission to fulfill in these latter days. We are humbled by the trust and responsibility that Thou hast placed upon all who study and serve here. Please bless us with an ever-increasing vision of Thy divine purposes for this place of learning. We thank Thee for the munificent contributions from individuals and families that have made these beautiful structures possible. May the faith and commitment of those who benefit from these gifts be equal to the faith in commitment of those who have given these gifts. Please bless us today and all who will ever enter into and use these buildings in the future with a capacity to recognize and appreciate Thy bounteous and tender mercies. Help us to never take such generosity for granted. Now acting in the authority of the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood we dedicate the Engineering Building and the Engineering Research Laboratory to Thee and to Thy purposes. We petition Thee Father to sanctify these facilities by the presence of the Holy Spirit. We pray that Thou wilt bless these structures in all of their component parts as well as the property and grounds on which they stand. We pray that no evil hand will enter, de-face, or damage these structures in any way. We also petition Thee that the Engineering Building and the Engineering Research Laboratory will be shielded from natural disasters and from the elements. We ask Thee to watch over and safeguard these sacred places. We dedicate these facilities as places of inspiring learning. We ask Thee to bless Thy sons and daughters who will study and work in the Engineering Building and in the Engineering Research Laboratory. May they seek for and be blessed by Thy Spirit and recognize the Holy Ghost as the supreme teacher and the divine power by which they may know the truth of all things. Please quicken their minds and invigorate their bodies. I bless them to understand in their hearts the eternal truth of the restored gospel of Thy Son and to comprehend the variety of subjects that will be learned here. We pray that the individuals who use these buildings may be filled with a spirit of curiosity and inquiry, of creativity and innovation, of pondering and learning, of insight and revelation, and of perseverance and joyfulness. May those who instruct be blessed with the gift of discernment and teach correct principles, strengthen and enable these good people as they assist Thy choice sons and daughters in coming unto Thy Son. May all who give and all who receive in these two marvelous facilities and on this campus be strengthened in their testimonies, in their conversion to Thy Son, in their competence and confidence, and in their commitment to consistently live the principles of the Gospel. We again express our thanks to Thee Father, for these magnificent facilities, for spiritual and temporal learning. We recognize our responsibility to use them properly and to preserve and to protect them. Heavenly Father, we love Thee, and we love Thy Son. We praise thy Holy Name. We acknowledge our dependence upon Thee and we pledge to honor our covenants to keep the commandments and to serve Thee with all of our heart, might, mind and strength. We offer this prayer of gratitude and dedication and we petition Thee most humbly for these blessings, in the sacred name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.”
