
14th Annual Colloquium on International Engineering Education

This two and half day colloquium provides for a stimulating sharing of ideas on how to prepare engineering students for success in the global marketplace. With the theme of 'Educating Global Leaders' the 2011 meeting will include the following sessions:
- Innovative approaches to international engineering education
- Perspectives from industry
- College-wide strategies for global engineering education
- Grand information fair and poster session
- Innovative approaches to language instruction
- BYU program showcase
- Assessment of international programs
- Integrating, funding and developing international programs
- Workshop 1: Getting started in international engineering programs
- Workshop 2: Strategies and sustainability for experienced international programs
BYU is well known for its international activities. The university regularly teaches classes in 50 languages, and approximately 70 percent of the student body is fluent in a second language. Additionally, BYU hosts several federally funded national resource centers, including:
- A national center for the study of Europe
- A national center for the study of Asia
- The Middle East Language Resource Center
- The Center for International Business Education and Research
- One of the largest Chinese Flagship programs in the United States
Approximately 25 percent of students in the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology have a technical international experience before they graduate. In 2011, BYU engineering students will complete programs in China, the Dominican Republic, Europe, India, Mexico, Peru and Singapore. Recently, the college established the Weidman Center for Global Leadership, funded by a generous $10 million donation. The center will be a sponsor of the colloquium.
Who should attend?
Anyone with an interest in international engineering education should attend, including university administrators, deans, engineering faculty, language faculty, international program coordinators and government agency and nonprofit representatives.
