The purpose of this course is to give you an introduction to surveying and engineering measurements. While many of you will not wind up working as surveyors, all of you will undoubtedly find yourselves in a position where you must have some survey work done as part of a larger project. Having a basic understanding of surveying principles will help as you work on projects requiring layout and topographic data gathering.

The course is hands-on oriented with much of the learning taking place during the laboratory sessions. You will get experience in basic operation and use of total stations, levels, and global positioning systems. Final results will often be plotted using the AutoCAD program.

Once basic surveying skills are learned, in class applications will focus on topographic mapping, construction projects, and highway layout. After completing this course you will have the requisite skills to get full and part-time internships as surveying crew members.

The following are the Civil Engineering Competencies covered in this course.

bullet8.113.1    Be able to make order of magnitude estimates, assess reasonableness of solutions, and report appropriate levels of numerical accuracy.
bullet8.113.2   Understand basic coordinate geometry functions and how they are used in surveying to reduce field measurements to useable quantities for design and analysis.
bullet8.113.3   Understand the uses and operations of engineering measuring devices such as theodolites, distance meters, levels, GPS.
bullet8.113.4     Be able to develop a map from measured elevation data.
bullet8.113.5     Develop a knowledge of basic mapping principles including the use of bearings, azimuths, coordinate systems, and topographic maps.
bullet8.113.6     From measured survey data, be able to compute slopes, distances, areas, and volumes.
bullet8.113.7    Be able to design & layout horizontal and vertical alignments for highways.
bullet8.113.8    Be able to use computer programs to develop surveying notes and final drawings.
