Setting up a FrontPage Web

This document describes the steps involved in setting up a personal web on the CAEDM network using FrontPage 2003.

The WWW Directory

Before explaining how to set up your web, it will help to review how the files are set up on the CAEDM network.  When your CAEDM account was established, a logical drive was created for your use.  When you logon to CAEDM, this drive appears as the j: drive.  On the j: drive, you have a directory called "www".  This directory has special permissions set up so that the contents of the directory are visible over the internet.  This is where you should put all of the web pages that you create.

Creating Your Web

To create your FrontPage web, do the following:

  1. Launch FrontPage 2003 from the Start menu in the CAEDM lab (Start/Program/Microsoft Office/Frontpage).
  2. Select the New command in the File menu.  This will display the Task Pane on the right side of the Frontpage window.
  3. Click on the One Page Web Site item in the New Web Site section of the Task Pane.  This will launch the Web Site Templates dialog.
  4. On the right side of the Web Site Templates dialog, you need to enter a path to where the web site will be created.  Type the following "J:\www\".
  5. On the left side of the dialog, pick a template.  I suggest you pick the One Page Web option (you can always add more pages later).
  6. Click the OK button.  This will create a Frontpage web in your www drive and it should create a default home page for your web (index.htm) automatically.
  7. After you exit the dialog, it should open a the index.htm file.  If it does not do that, click on the Folders icon on the left side of the Frontpage window.  Then double click on index.htm.

At this point, you can begin editing your web using the tools described in the class lectures.

Viewing Your Completed Web

Your page is automatically "posted" and you should be able to browse to it.  The address of the page will be http://www.et.byu.edu/~XXX where XXX is your CAEDM user name.  For example, if my CAEDM login name is billybob, then my e-mail address is billybob@et.byu.edu and my home page address would be http://www.et.byu.edu/~billybob/.

Editing Your Web

To edit your web at a later date:

  1. Launch FrontPage.
  2. Select the Open Web command from the File menu.
  3. In the Folder Name field at the bottom of the dialog, enter j:\www\
  4. Select the OK button.
  5. If you are prompted, enter your CAEDM user name and password.
