CE En 540 - Homework #

Preliminary Landfill Design

For this assignment you will divided up into teams and do a preliminary design for a landfill.  The teams will be as follows:

Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4
Adsero, Matthew
Darnall, Daniel
Ferrell, John
Hamilton, Dale
Lundgreen, Christopher
Manley, Lourdes
Nickerl, Lindsey
Obregon, Oliver
Savage, Chad
Snediger, Sterling
Snyder, Aaron
Stanley, Shawn
Walker, Cari
Wannberg, Veronica
Webb, David
Winters, Kevin

Note: The data for this site come from the TransJordan landfill.  You may not simply mimic the TransJordan design in order to complete the assignment.  You should start from scratch.

This is a topo map of the site prior to construction:

The following file contains a copy of the topo map in CAD format:

sitetopo.dwg

When you open this file in AutoCAD (or some other drawing program), it may report the length of the drawing as 5197 inches.  It is actually 5197 feet.  The units appear to be off by a factor of 12.

The new landfill will actually be placed adjacent to an existing, older landfill that has been capped, i.e., the landfill will be expanded with a modern, engineered landfill.  The old landfill is shown as the raised area on the top (north) part of the map.  The new expansion will occur of the south side of the existing landfill (approximately 90 acres).  The contours shown on the map represent the property boundary.  In other words, your design can not extend beyond the limit of the map.

You may also find the following data useful:

  • Depth to groundwater ~ 350'

  • Average rainfall = 25 inches

  • Volume of waste to landfill = 1,300 tons per day, 5 days a week.

  • Required life of landfill = 28 years

Your assignment is to perform a preliminary design for the landfill expansion.  Your design should include the following:

  1. Number, layout and geometry (depth, height, side slope, etc.) of the cells used in the expansion.

  2. Timing and sequencing of cell construction.

  3. Plan for dealing with soil from excavation (if applicable) and soil required for daily cover.  Include volume estimates.

  4. Schematic (cross-section) of bottom liner system.

  5. Schematic of cap.

Do not include details on leachate collection system (layout of pipes, pipe sizes, etc.).  We will cover that later.

As you design your bottom liner system, try not to overdesign.  Your client has limited funds.

Prepare your results in the form of a Powerpoint presentation.  We will take a class period to compare the designs.  Also submit a spreadsheet outlining your calculations.

I would like to thank Dwayne Woolley for providing the map and data.
