HW #2 - MODAEM

Note: You may work in pairs on this assignment.

Build a MODAEM model of the following site:

Use the following steps:

1)      Right-click and save the following zip archive to your local drive.

        homework/hw02/files.zip

        Unzip the files and then open up the start.gpr file in GMS.

2)      Optional: change the transparency of the background image to about 50% by right-clicking on the Images item in the Project Explorer window.

3)      Create a MODAEM conceptual model

4)      Create a MODAEM boundary coverage.

5)      Create the boundary arcs.  You will have a no-flow boundary across the top where the floodplain meets the hills.  You will have a specified head boundary across the bottom and right sides at the location of the two rivers.

a.       Spec head along bottom and right side

                                                  i.      H = 740 on left node

                                                ii.      H = 720 on junction node at bottom

                                              iii.      H = 730 on node at upper right.

b.      No-Flow along the top

6)      Go to Global Options dialog and set:

a.       Base = 600

b.      Thickness = 200

c.       Leave K and n at default

7)      Solve.

8)      Turn on color fill contours with transparency.

9)      Duplicate the boundary converage to create a recharge coverage

a.       Be sure to change the coverage properties to turn on the recharge option.

b.      Double-click on the polygon and enter a recharge rate = 0.0003

10)  Solve.

11)  Create a new coverage called “Wells”.  Do not duplicate.  This should be an empty coverage.

12)  Create a well over on the right side of the model at the approximate location of well #2 in the figure above.  Enter a Q = -2000.  Turn on pathlines and use 32 particles.

13)  Solve.

14)  Go to the Display Options and change the travel time to 20,000 days.

15)  Show how you can zoom in and solve again to get a higher resolution solution.

16)  Go into the Wells coverage setup dialog and turn on the barrier option.  Create a barrier arc between the well and the landfill and solve again.
