3D modeling is a vital part of the product development process in most major and minor product design studios and large companies which produce and sell a physical product.  An ability to construct good models of your product designs will help you communicating your design and in its production.  The purpose of this class is to increase your knowledge of surface modeling theory and talent in surface modeling (using Alias Auto Studio).  Along with surface modeling we will be learning about rendering techniques for our surface models.  This includes learning about shaders, lightning, and rendering options.  Also we will learn to take our data from our models to regenerate other usable data types for rapid-prototyping and manufacturing.   As part of this process we will mill out a model on the small Roland mill.

There will be 5 major modeling assignments.  All are to be done in AutoStudio, and for some assignments, importing the models into another package.  There will be other smaller in-class/homework assignments also worth points toward your grade.  We will also have some quizzes concerning terminology and theory of surface modeling.

Grades-

I hate having to grade, but it must be done.  The final grade will break done as follows:

90-100%           A- to A
80-89                B- to B+
70-79                C- to C+
69-60                D- to D+
below 60           Fail

Grades will be based on the following weights for the areas of classwork:

Assignments (Modeling and Rendering Assignments):   60%
    Assignment #1- Modeling and Rendering - 5%
    Assignment #2-
Modeling and Rendering - 10%

Assignment #3- Modeling and Rendering - 15%
    Assignment #4- Modeling and Rendering - 15%
    Assignment #5- Modeling and Rendering - 15%

Homework assignments:                                                       35%

Quizzes:                                                                                  5%

Each assignment is graded on a 0 to 10 point scale.

Completed homework is worth 10pts. per homework assignment, late homework is worth 6pts.

Late assignments will be penalized by 2 points.
(example:  a project otherwise worth 8 points would get  6 points in turned in late)

NO LATE ASSIGNMENT OR HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED IF IT IS MORE THEN 14 DAYS LATE!!!

The due dates for each assignment will be given out during class and posted on the website.
