September 2008

The Fulton College lecture for October will feature Honored Alumnus Douglas C. Welling, the president and chief operating officer of Jacobsen Construction. All students are invited to attend this lecture in 140 JSB, Thurs. Oct. 9 at 11 a.m.

Welling, a resident of Farmington, Utah, is the man behind many significant structures in Utah. His work contributed to the Utah State Capitol Base Isolation and Restoration, BYU Lee Library addition, the LDS Conference Center, the LDS Tabernacle Restoration, and twelve LDS Temples.

Welling's lecture, entitled Salt Lake Tabernacle: Build it Strong Boys, Build it Strong!, will examine engineering solutions using the tabernacle as a case study. He will also discuss ways to build strong morals and relationships. The title is taken from a quotation by President Gordon B. Hinckley:

"Though built of wood, in the days of the poverty of our people, though designed and constructed without modern engineering and architectural expertise, it has stood and served for 125 years, a unique and wonderful house of worship and culture. In imagination I can see Brigham Young standing here and looking up at the men putting together the timbers, and saying, 'Build it strong, boys. Build it strong!'"

A member of the Advancement Council for Engineering and Technology for the Fulton College, Welling was awarded the 2007 Outstanding Service Award from the University of Utah's College of Engineering for work on the Warnock Engineering Building and the Outstanding Service Award from the Utah House of Representatives in 2008 for the Capitol Restoration project.
