Student AD Pandey looks into summer internshps at the career fair.
Hundreds of students attended the Fulton College’s semi-annual career fair in January. Despite the current economic woes, 74 employers attended the event, seeking BYU’s best and brightest.
“We’ve heard a lot about how the economy is affecting the job market,” said civil engineering graduate student Marcor Platt. “But I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the number of openings in engineering.”
The event, co-sponsored by the Fulton College and the university’s Career and Placement Services, was open to engineering and technology students of the Fulton College as well as math and science majors from across campus. Many felt better prepared to meet with recruiters thanks to the resume workshops offered in advance of the fair.
“My roommate went to one of the resume workshops last fall and learned a lot,” Platt said. Encouraged by his roommate’s success, Platt attended a workshop offered the week before the career fair. “We didn’t make any major changes, just some small things; but overall I’m very pleased.”
Platt, who graduates with a master’s degree in civil engineering this spring, was looking for a full-time position. Others in attendance were looking for internships, trying to round out their academic experience.
Arpit Deota Pandey, a junior from Roorkee, India, attended the fair hoping to find a summer internship. “My first choice is to stay here in Utah, but I have been keeping my options open,” Pandey said. “Now I’m really excited because I found some really great local companies who have positions available.”
