*Eye protection is required whenever you are using the lab. You can not take off your safety glasses or face shield. This is important the entire time that you are in the lab. When you are operating ANY power equipment or when anyone else is operating ANY power equipment, this is imperative.
*Long hair must be tied back to prevent it from dangling or falling into machinery. (this wouldn't be a problem if your hair was not attached to your head)
*Any loose clothing must be removed (if appropriate) or tucked in. This includes vests, jackets, baggy shirts, etc.
*Long sleeves must be tightly rolled up past the elbows.
*Jewelry must be removed. This includes, but is not limited to rings, watches, bracelets, necklaces, etc.
*When using the band saw, make relief cuts to prevent binding or breaking the blade. (ask a TA to assist you if you are uncomfortable with this)
*Never back out of a cut with the band saw blade running.
*Don't talk with or closely watch someone who is using a power tool or machine. Distractions can cause an accident.
*No power equipment is to be operated without instruction from the TA.s
*No open toed shoes or sandals are permitted in the lab. If you wear these to the lab, you will need to go home and change before you can begin work. Also, wear good shoes with plenty of traction.
*If you are uncomfortable with anything or feel that you are doing something wrong, please don't hesitate to ask the TA. It is not worth causing an accident. Please ask if you are unsure.
*Other people in the lab can assist you, especially if you are working on the same project or if they have completed what you are working on. However, be aware that if there are more questions, it is safest to ask the TA.
