29 May 06 - 23:11Computer Troubles

This entry was originally written on Sunday, May 28. It concerns the happenings on that day and a few days previous to that day.

I attempted to post a message the other day, but was unable to do so because of the following experience.  I usually write my messages in MS FrontPage.  This does my spell checking for me and makes it easy to add links in HTML format. (more)

24 May 06 - 22:26A Bike Ride and the Hydrologic Engineering Center

Last night, I took a bike ride from my house up to Vivian Park.  I have been up to Vivian Park several times, but I have to say that I am starting to love that bike ride almost as much as I love to hike up Rock Canyon.  It is a perfect evening bike ride throughout the summer because of the cool temperatures and the fantastic canyon views.  There is a paved trail from the mouth of Provo Canyon (located about 1/2 mile from my house) leading all the way to Vivian Park, a distance of about 5 miles.  The trail winds through Provo Canyon alongside the Provo River, passing through a canopy of trees and a total of 6 parks through the canyon with views of Mt. Timpanogos on the left and Cascade Mountain on the right.  One of the features of this ride is the famous Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon, a cascading waterfall with a height of about 200 feet streaming down to the Provo river from the side of Cascade Mountain.  It takes me about 1/2 hour to bike from my house to Vivian Park, a beautiful forested area with water and pine trees everywhere.  From this park, I turn around and return home at a high speed since the ride home is almost all downhill.

22 May 06 - 21:42Cool Summer Night and Random Happenings

Tonight is a cool summer night here in Orem, UT. It has actually been a cool day compared with the heat of recent days. I turned on the air conditioner for the first time yesterday, but it was cool enough today to turn the air conditioner back off for the next few days, at least until it heats up again. Overall, it has been a very pleasant day. This is a great time of year, especially when I have extra time to spend outside like I do now.  Earlier today, I was able to teach the CEEn 594R class for the second time.  I feel like the class went pretty well, but I could be mistaken.  It is hard to tell until I receive the class teacher reviews. 22 May 06 - 00:07Late Sabbath Night

It is late at night on Sunday. I do not know that there is anything interesting to report today. On Saturday afternoon, I needed to get outside and do something, so I decided to go hiking up the “Big Springs” trail on the South Fork of the Provo River. My intent was to go until I was tired of walking, so I hiked up the trail for about 1 ½ hours and began to run into large fields of runoff water trickling down the trail followed by large snow packs. I got to a point where I could not go any farther because of the snow-covered and/or muddy trail, so I turned around and went back down to my car. This trail supposedly goes all the way to a pass on the side of Cascade Mountain, and then down into Rock Canyon and Provo, but I will have to try going there later in the year after the snow has melted. 18 May 06 - 23:19A fence and US immigration policy

The fence in my back yard is in very bad shape. One of the posts rotted away and broke and took the fence panel with it. This fence adjoins my neighbor Tim’s property, so we are working together on fixing it. Tonight, I finished removing the old post and all the concrete around it and set the new post in place with a small amount of concrete to hold it in place. Tim came out to help me and suggested that we should also replace the pickets and rails attached to the post since the old ones were rotting away. (more)

17 May 06 - 23:43A laptop, a sister's birthday, and volcanic eruptions

I received a new laptop, a Dell Latitude D820, through my work a couple of weeks ago. It is nice to be able to take this laptop anywhere I want and to type on my laptop & access the internet from anywhere in the house now. When I originally received the laptop, it had a keyboard problem (with the “control” keys), but Dell promptly sent a new keyboard and the problem was fixed. The only problem with this new laptop is that it has kept me awake late at night working on this Blog and I have been slow, sleepy, and cranky during the day. I need to stop going to bed so late and get more sleep. That will be one of my goals for tomorrow. (more)

16 May 06 - 23:39Back at home, much to do

I was going to attempt to get caught up on the rest of my entries from my last day in Texas to today (Tue, May 16), but there is just too much to write and I need to go to bed soon. So I will write an overview of what I have been doing for the last week. (more)

Today (Mon., May 8), I was at the AWRA GIS in Water Resources conference in Houston, TX. It was much the same as the last conference (Nashville, 2004), with an emphasis on using ArcGIS for water modeling. (more)
