5. (25) Case Study

You have just been made a partner in a prominent, respected consulting structural engineering firm. Your children are deeply involved with athletics, cheerleading and student government and your spouse is providing a great service to the numerous underprivileged people in your community. Your firm has been under contract to the government for the past several years on the largest public facility in the area. Over 80% of the current work that supports your firm comes from this project. The remaining 20% was work on a housing project for the underprivileged.

You have not taken the time to fully understand the government's reasons for building the structure, because you do not fully support the government's social values, but you recognize that the project is providing an opportunity for growth and security for the employees of your firm. The structure will also provide a significant tourist resource for your community and probably relief of the current high taxes. You know the structure is 100% funded from the current overburdensome tax. You are committed to make sure your firms work is fair and equitable. Rod Nimson, the government's chief engineer, has some ideas that you don't concur with, however, he has just met with your firm and has ask you individually to help solve a communication problem that continues to plague the project. You have seen the cause of this problem and know that you can help keep the project on budget by solving this situation.

Your skilled draftsman,, Jared M. and his unnamed brother, visited your home and brought to your attention information about Rod Nimson. They indicated that he would soon require 100% commitment from your firm, require work on the project 7 days a week, and may divert the use of the public facility to gambling, other worldly undesirable things. They invite you leave the employ of Rod Nimson , with your family, move with them to the North Slope of Alaska.

What do you do? Explain why you will do what you do and why you won't pursue other actions.

6. (12) Reality Model

a) (6) Describe the aspects of the model you feel are accurate in characterizing the process of practicing ethics in your life

b) (6) Describe the aspects of the model that you feel fall short of characterizing the process of practicing ethics in your life.

7.(10) Comment on the following two quotes from our readings. Do you agree? Why or why not? What can be done to either broaden an engineer's perspective or demonstrate that an engineer is more broad than the authors indicate.

". . . narrowness in technical education, and a high degree of specialization handicaps many engineers in evaluating the relationship of their work to societal questions."

". . . in their (educated professionals) specialization they also carry the consequences of limited comprehension of the other facets of society and other fields of knowledge. Perhaps in the forefront of these nearsighted professionals are the people greatly responsible for today's technical society, the engineers."
