TITLE: " Micropower for Micromachines"

SPEAKERS: John N. Harb, Chemical Engineering Department, Brigham Young University

ABSTRACT: Imagine machines that are so small that you need a microscope to distinguish their features, Further, imagine that you can build these machines by the tens of thousands for a few cents each. Such machines are part of the next revolution in the silicon industry that seeks to do more than simply decrease the size and increase the complexity of electronic devices. Efforts are underway to provide a whole new level of functionality on a "chip." A new generation of microdevices capable of interacting with and responding to their environment is under development. The small accelerometer used to activate the airbag in your automobile in an example of such a device. Numerous other potential applications exist, including a variety of microsensors for the home and workplace. Brigham Young University and industry are working together to provide power for a class of these micromachines designed to operate in a remote, autonomous fashion.

RSVP: NO LATER THAN MONDAY, MARCH 15 TO VICKI JONES, Department of Chemical & Fuels Engineering, University of Utah 581-6915, or KIM WARES, Department of Chemical Engineering, Brigham Young University, 378-2588
