Stand out from the Stack: Resume Tips

On Monday, January 30, Brandon Pack, senior engineering and hiring manager for Adobe, gave students tips on how to market themselves with a good resume. 

The objective of a resume is to get an interview from it. Pack stressed to be yourself in your resume and in interviews that come from people seeing those resumes. He said to be relaxed and if you do not get the job you want at first, do not give up. Keep trying to get where you want to be.

Basics

  • Make sure your name is the biggest thing you see.
  • Keep it short—one page, two max.
  • Organize it so the most important information comes first.
  • Use bullet points, not long sentences, so it is easier to read.
  • Use action verbs. For example: “managed a team” instead of “responsible for managing a team.”
  • If you do not have any professional experience, talk about projects you have worked on in classes.
  • Tailor your resume to the company you are applying to. Thoroughly read the job description and include the requested skills in your resume.

Keep Customizing

  • Resumes you submit online should be different from those you hand out personally.  Online resumes go into a database while resumes handed out personally go on someone’s desk.  
  • If uploading online, it may go into a database, so:
    • Use keywords related to your field and the job you are applying for, and make it skills focused.
    • If you used a PDF, make sure it is in a readable format.
    • Stay away from a lot of complicated formatting to make it easier for the database to read and search for you.
  • If applying directly:
    • Make it easy to read and visually pleasing.
    • Focus on your accomplishments instead of keywords
    • Formatting and columns are preferred.

Use LinkedIn

  • Build your brand and market yourself.
  • Use a professional photo.
  • Make sure the top of your profile is appealing. You need to capture people’s attention in five to 10 seconds, so make sure your summary is appealing and interesting.
  • Fill out your skills section because those make it easier for people to search for you.
  • Link to portfolios if you have them.
  • Some employers do not pay as much attention to endorsements or associations, so don’t stress over those.

Show Who You Are

  • Show you are passionate about something.
  • Show your ability to learn and adapt.
  • Show projects you have worked on and your role.
  • Show you are results-oriented.
  • Show what you can bring to the company.

Things Employers Look At

  • If you have hopped from job to job.
  • If there are any big gaps in your career.
  • If you have the ability to learn and adapt.
  • If you have drive and a desire to have an impact.

Resume Do’s

  • Proofread and spell check it. Mistakes like that are costly.
  • Get feedback on it. BYU Career Services provides resume reviews.
  • Indicate how long you worked at each job.
  • Include course work, especially if you do not have much job experience.
  • Clearly separate sections.
  • Focus on your strengths and accomplishments.
  • Have references upon request. You usually need three, so make sure those people are aware they are your references.

Resume Don’ts

  • Do not include you were an Eagle Scout or a Girl Scout.
  • Do not include personal interests, unless they apply directly to the job you are applying for.
  • Do not have any pictures on the resume.
  • Do not use crazy fonts or colors.
  • Do not contact companies every day after you have applied. Every couple of weeks is okay.
  • Do not lie on your resume. Always be accurate!
  • You do not have to have an objective. It is good to include if it is extremely personalized to the position you are applying for.

Stand out

  • Differentiate yourself from other applicants somehow. Make sure they know who you are and that they remember you.
  • Make sure employers know you have ambition, a good work ethic, and most of all a good attitude. Pack stressed that ambition and attitude can carry as much weight as experience.
