Electric power generation accounts for about 1/3 of the total US CO2 production. Coal accounts for over 80% of US CO2 production from power generation and about 54% of the power generation. This represents approximately 1 billion tons of coal consumed annually by approximately 1200 coal-fired power plants.
Meaningful reductions in CO2 emissions in the power generation sector can best be accomplished by working with the existing power plants.
