Wetted Wall Column Hints                                                                    updated 3/1/2005

  1. Make sure that the entire wall is wetted, but that there are no wrinkles.
  2. Make sure to measure the atmospheric pressure (barometric) and the relative humidity of the air.
  3. The adjustment of the water at the top can be a bit finicky.  Clamping it in place can also change conditions slightly.  Be patient!
  4. You are expected to obtain lots of data for this experiment, including repeat experiments.  This will help with the statistics.  Use all of the lab time to gather data if you want full credit.
  5. The falling film correlation is on page 40, Eqn. 2.2-20 of Transport Phenomena, by Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot (red book, first edition), or on page 46, Eqn. 2.2-22 (blue and yellow book, second edition).  You may derive this for a cylinder instead of a flat wall, but other students found little difference.
