BYU professor selected as a highly cited researcher

Michael Scott, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at BYU, has been selected as a 2016 ISI Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher. Scott is recognized among nearly 3,000 researchers worldwide who have published influential articles in academic journals.

Researchers earn this distinction by writing the largest number of articles selected as highly cited papers. Scott’s placement as a recipient of this award means that his published work has been judged to be of particular importance by his peers.

The BYU chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was honored with the Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award, naming them the most outstanding student chapter in the nation.

At BYU's third annual Ford Day, executives from the company networked with faculty and students, praising BYU for the preparedness of their graduates. BYU places in the top 20 schools for the number of graduates offered positions at Ford, and the Detroit-based company has hired more than 30 BYU graduates over the last 12 months.

At the summer convocation services for the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Richard Balling, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at BYU spoke to the graduating class. He encouraged the graduates to be innovative and willing to take leadership roles in the buisness and political worlds.

BYU engineers earn 18 honor society scholarships

Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, recently named its 210 scholars for the 2016-17 academic year. This year, 18 scholars are Brigham Young University students, which is more than any other institution in the country, accounting for nine percent of the total scholarship recipients. Winners receive $2,000 for a full year or $1,000 for a semester to assist their engineering studies

How to stun at the STEM Career Fair

On Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., thousands of qualified students will gather in the WSC Ballroom and Garden Court, all trying to do the same thing—impress recruiters from nearly 200 top-tier STEM organizations like Ford Motor, Adobe and Microsoft. The thought of it might seem daunting, but the BYU STEM Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to sell oneself and score that dream internship or job. 

Faculty research speed-pitch results in major BYU collaborations

Hosted by BYU Research Development, roughly three dozen faculty presented at a speed-pitch event focused on linking faculty across disciplines. More than 80 percent of attendees found potential collaborators.

Civil engineering student Cali McMurtrey has been awarded the 2016-2017 Senior Undergraduate Scholarship from the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO). McMurtrey will receive a $7,500 scholarship for this upcoming academic year, a one-year ASDSO student membership and complimentary registration and travel to ASDSO’s 2016 annual conference in Philadelphia.
