Join the lab

We welcome prepared students who want to do real research.

Our lab work is hands-on, quantitative, and time intensive. We are glad to hear from students who have reviewed our internal-wave research areas and can explain how their interests fit.

Pathways

Clear expectations help everyone do better work.

Undergraduate Students

  • Undergraduates typically begin by volunteering 6-10 hours per week for at least half a semester.
  • The usual next step is a 3-credit ME EN 497R research experience, which can count as a technical elective.
  • 497R is usually the first step before paid research.
  • If the 497R goes well and there is an opening, a student may transition to a paid position.
  • 497R students typically work 11-12 hours per week, comparable to the time commitment needed to earn an A in a 300- or 400-level engineering course.
  • 497R can be done during Fall, Winter, or a Spring-Summer combination. For Spring-Summer, students work for about 15 weeks spanning Spring and part of Summer.
  • Interested students should email an unofficial transcript.

Graduate Students

  • Review our research areas before contacting us.
  • Identify at least one project or research direction that fits your interests.
  • Email an unofficial transcript with a concise note about your preparation and fit.
  • We are especially interested in students who are ready to work across experiments, models, and data analysis.

Partners

  • We are interested in industry-academic partnerships, translational engineering collaborations, sponsored projects, and applied research opportunities.
  • Good conversations often begin with a specific fluid-dynamics problem, measurement challenge, or modeling need.
  • Contact us with a short description of the opportunity, timeline, and the kind of collaboration you have in mind.
