BYU IT students developing STEM learning game with $2M NSF grant

BYU Information Technology students and faculty have teamed with University of Maryland students, Tinder Transmedia and NASA to develop an alternate-reality game to get kids involved in STEM-based learning.  The game, "DUST", was made possible by $2 million in funding from the National Science Foundation and is expected to launch on Jan. 26.

BYU Student Innovator of the Year contestants David Hepworth and Chase Roberts have experienced this many times over and it has driven them to develop a way for online users to pledge money to creators of excellent online content. Their idea, Penny Pledge, plans to put a penny behind every “Like” on the Internet.

Construction management professor named CMAA Educator of the Year

Dr. Kevin Miller, BYU construction management program chair, recently received the Construction Management Association of America’s Student Educator of the Year award for his outstanding service to the academic field of construction management.

BYU’s 3D virtual reality system works just as well as the popular Oculus Rift, but is exponentially less expensive. The system has been programmed to help engineers change the way they view environmental engineering challenges. 

 

 

Never lose your child again with this student-made smart band

BYU MBA students have developed a Bluetooth smart band for children to ensure that you never lose track of your child again. The Kiband smart band placed in the top three during this year’s Student Innovator of the Year Competition. 

BYU professors receive Outstanding Mechanical Engineer awards from Purdue University

Two BYU professors have received Outstanding Mechanical Engineer awards from Purdue University's School of Mechanical Engineering. One of the professors, Brent Webb, received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering here at BYU and currently serves as the BYU academic vice president.

Layne Webb, general manager at Alcon Laboratories, spoke to students about the importance that leadership plays in collaborative work. He explained that a successful leader can be the catalyst for exceptional collaborative results, as long as that leader is able to channel qualities of trust, compassion, stability and hope.

BYU places third in Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Academic Olympiad

The BYU National Academic Olympiad team took third place at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineer's conference. The competition pits three-person teams of Hispanic engineering students against one another in a series of academic competitions.
