Industrial design student wins regional award, heads to national competition

Steve Madsen, a BYU industrial design student was recognized with the Industrial Designers Society of America Merit Award for the Western District.

BYU formula hybrid places 4th in nation

A gas-electric hybrid race car designed and built by a team of BYU engineers finished in fourth place overall in the Formula Hybrid competition at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The car also took first place in the electric acceleration category.

Civil engineering professor honored by Canadian society

 
A BYU civil engineering professor was selected as the Cross-Canada Geotechnical Lecturer for fall 2009.

Kyle M. Rollins was given the honor by the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) for his research concerning earthquake engineering, liquefaction, deep foundations and soil improvement techniques.  Since 1965 the CGS has selected prominent engineers who have made significant contributions to engineering practice to spend two weeks lecturing in cities across Canada.

Birthday-cake candles power BYU engineers new vehicles

BYU engineering students recently toyed with a new power source for tiny vehicles: the small candles commonly used atop birthday cakes.

BYU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers places fourth at national competition

 
The BYU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers placed fourth in the nation at the society's Academic Olympiad.  The competition took place at the national conference in Washington D.C. Oct. 29 through Nov. 1.  

Under the direction of electrical engineering professor Richard Selfridge, the BYU chapter also participated in workshops, presentations and a career fair.  More than 3,700 students and professionals attended the event.
