Partner at Bain & Company to give lecture on leadership Thursday, Nov. 7

Mr. Gottfredson, a partner in the Dallas office of Bain & Company, will deliver the college lecture this Thursday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in 140 JSB.  His remarks are entitled "Leadership: More than the Inspirational Speech."

Smart foam takes aim at concussions by measuring helmet impact

Combining nanotechnology with foam, ME student Jake Merrell has created a smart-foam that can be placed inside a football helmet to measure the impact of each hit. When compressed, the self-powered foam generates electrical signals that are transmitted wirelessly to a tablet or computer in the hands of a coach or trainer.  Merrell’s working prototype recently won a top three finish (and $2,000) at our Student Innovator of the Year competition.

The electrical and computer engineering honored alumnus for 2013 is David Arnold, CEO of Wavetronix. He will speak to electrical and computer engineering students on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 11:00 a.m. in 456 MARB.

Information Technology students collaborate to create virtual tour of BYU

BYU students wielding cameras with fisheye lenses walked nearly every inch of the 560-acre Provo campus to capture images that they would then stitch together to create a virtual tour of campus. They also inserted a host of existing content into the experience, including embedded videos, social media plug ins, historical information and student advice.

The final round of Student Innovator of the Year awarded $12,000 in grants to deserving young innovators. The grand prize of $5,000 was given to ReForm, a rapid, durable and efficient home construction innovation.

New breast cancer imaging technique could cut down on false positives

A joint BYU-Utah research team is developing a new breast cancer screening technique that has the potential to reduce false positives, and, possibly, minimize the need for invasive biopsies.  Researchers, led by BYU electrical engineer Neal Bangerter and U of U collaborators, are getting five-times more accurate images with a sodium MRI device.

Last year's SIOY champions, Owlet, earned more than $160,000 in investments and have successfully launched their baby monitor business.

The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University will host its fourth annual Student Innovator of the Year (SIOY) competition on Oct. 17 and 24.

Several teams of student inventors will compete for $12,000 in prize money. Entries will be judged on engineering innovation, product originality, usefulness, market potential, as well as the level of clarity and professionalism of each team's presentation.

John Warren to deliver lecture on 'Learning While Leading'

The Weidman Center Leadership Lecture series will kick off with an address from John Warren, vice president of strategic business solutions at IPS Learning, on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in 214 CTB.  All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
